Lates Communications from Bucks County Safe Kids:
Now that the summer months are finally here, it is paramount that we continue to remind parents, caregivers, and communities to never leave a child alone in a car and to emphasize the importance of calling 911 when a child is found alone in a vehicle. That being said, we would also like to remind you, the coalitions, of another medium for spreading awareness of this issue, the Badge of Courage.
As you all know, the Badge of Courage is an award bestowed upon those in the community who have taken the initiative to report children that are left alone in vehicles. The Badge of Courage is meant to honor citizens who have taken actions to prevent children from succumbing to heat stroke as well as for the emergency responders who have taken extraordinary measures to remove trapped children from vehicles. For example, in April, a woman in Lawrenceville, Georgia was recognized for immediately calling 911 after spotting a child locked in a car and sending other bystanders to look for the child’s caregiver in nearby stores. The 911 operator and emergency responders were also recognized for their prompt response and efforts to ensure that the child was safely removed from the car and that the incident was fully investigated.
The Badge of Courage is an award that should be reserved for citizens in the community who have taken the steps to save a child’s life by calling 911 as well as first responders that have taken extraordinary steps to ensure that a child is safely removed from a car. By awarding those who have gone above and beyond, we can continue to keep this award special. If you have any questions about nominations, please do not hesitate to contact Alexis Kagiliery at alee@safekids.org or Alyssa Hahn at ahahn@safekids.org. Nominations can be submitted online at http://www.safekids.org/safety-basics/safety-guide/kids-in-and-around-cars/never-leave-your-child-alone-badge.html. Thank you for everything that you to keep kids safe!
